As far as landmarks go, this is one of the most interesting and significant in Santa Barbara. It rivals the Mission in complexity and beauty. It is also the site of an active archeological dig. Most of the buildings are thoroughly researched reconstructions using the real foundation of the original Presidio. Only El Cuertal, the family quarters of the guard assigned to the western gate, and the Canedo Adobe, which was deeded to a soldier after the Presidio was no longer active, survive from the original buildings.

Top Trails

Knapp’s Castle   A favorite at sunset, this short walk leads to the ruins of a hunting lodge that burned in the 1040 Paradises Canyon fire.  Turn off Hwy. 154 on E. Camino Cielo, drive three miles; 1 mile round-trip.

Seven Falls    After a wet winter, water cascades down this Mission Canyon chasm, creating pools and falls – known to local thrill seekers as natural waterslides.  Requires scrambling and rock hopping.  Trailhead at the end of Tunnel Rd. follow Tunnel Trail until turning right up the creek bed; 2 to 3 miles round-trip.

Inspiration Point   Hikers, runners, bikers, and dogs take to this moderate uphill trail that offers some of the best views in town.  Trailhead at the end of Tunnel Rd.; 3.5 miles round-trip.

Rattlesnake Canyon   A shady creekside path that gently rises to a meadow.  Trailhead adjacent to Skofield Park, 1819 Las Canos Rd., Santa Barbara, 3.5 miles round-trip.

Cold Spring Trail   A steady uphill hike that leads from dappled creekside stretch to a steep, rocky climb through chaparral to Montecito Peak.  Turn left from Hot Springs Rd. to E. Mountain Dr. drive one mile, trailhead starts across the stream; 9 miles round-trip.

Manzana Schoolhouse   We’d be remiss not to mention one backcountry hike.  After following and crossing Manzana Creek for about 8.5 miles, backpackers arrive at campsites near a swimming hole and abandoned schoolhouse.  Turn off Hwy. 154 on Armour Ranch Rd., right on Happy Canyon Rd. to Cachuma Saddle, end at Davy Brown Campground; 17 miles round trip.
